Mike Gange is an award winning teacher, writer and broadcaster.
Mike teaches at Fredericton High School, in Fredericton, N.B, Canada. He is a pioneer in teaching media studies,
and a recognized leader in media education in Canada. He also teaches journalism, and helps his students get
published in a wide variety of media. His students’ work has twice been named the best student journalism in
New Brunswick, while individuals from his classes have won numerous awards and recognition.
Prior to becoming a teacher, Mike worked as a journalist in radio, television and print, in small, medium and large
markets across Canada. He regularly writes book reviews for his local papers, The Saint John Telegraph Journal
and the Fredericton Daily Gleaner. He has published nearly 100 book reviews, mostly about the mass media and
popular culture. Since 1999, he has averaged better than one review per month. He often contributes articles and
reviews to Telemedium, the Journal of Media Studies.
During the university sports seasons, he calls play-by-play action on hockey and basketball games for the University
of New Brunswick on both television and the Internet. He gets many of his students involved in the sports coverage
of these games, getting them to work in some capacity on the remote broadcasts.
While on a sabbatical from teaching, he returned to the media, working as a journalist in Canadian parliament in
Ottawa and at professional hockey and baseball games in Toronto, Ottawa, New York, Montreal, Baltimore and Atlanta.
He has written a book about those experiences and is in the process of getting it published.
Mike devotes a large part of his efforts to promoting Professional Development for teachers, within his school and beyond.
He is a popular and dynamic presenter at teachers’ functions across his province and at National and International conferences.
Recently, Mike was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, the most prestigious award
that can be earned by a Canadian teacher. He also was named “Teacher of the Year” by the New Brunswick Teacher’s Association.
