Avoid Image Plagiarism

Developed by:  Deborah B. Stanley, M.A., Teacher Librarian-Retired

Grade Levels:   4-12               The  Research Process Extension: Retrieve Images
A) Standards:

Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

·   CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W9-10.8. Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, … avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

CA Model School Library Standards

·   Standard 6.Gr 9-10: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products, taking advantage of technology’s capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and dynamically.

B) Collaborative Planning/Writing lesson:

Classroom teacher:

·   Helps develop “flipped classroom” lesson: View video for downloading Google images without plagiarizing.

·   Helps create lesson evaluation.

Teacher Librarian (TL):

·   Helps select “flipped classroom” videos: 1) downloading Google images without plagiarizing, 2) public domain images.

·   Writes skill sequence for locating and downloading Google images.

Materials

·   “Flipped classroom” videos.

·   1-to-1: each student has a Chromebook.

·   Paper handout with image download directions, or link to directions.

·   Student research notes or project in Google drive.

Lesson Time:

·   One 50-minute period, or as available on Library Master Calendar.

·   Library lab, as needed, for students not having their device.

Essential Question:

How can students locate and use images without plagiarizing?

A) Classroom teacher, lesson collaborator:

·   Welcomes students, takes attendance, announcements.

·   Clarifies that the classroom teacher’s role applies to content-area and the teacher librarian’s role applies to research and technology.

B) Teacher Librarian, direct instruction:

·   Set:

o Set research skills goal: Download images without plagiarism

o Cover relevant standards for technology without plagiarism.

o Explain concepts: plagiarism, public domain, citing images

·   Instruction:

o Show students what not to do, i.e.; grab an unfiltered image, fail to cite, grab image as link instead of as jpeg.

o Show videos: 1) download Google images without plagiarizing and 2) sources of public domain images.

o Explain sequential steps/skills for Google image downloads, referring to handout as needed:

Guided practice:

o Allow time for students to locate a topic-based image and follow image-downloading steps.

o Assist students individually, as needed.

o Allow time for students to create citation using online citation creator from previous “Sources” lesson.

·   Closure: Assess student understanding

o Show downloaded image, perhaps inserted into each student’s technology project for this research unit.

o Show citation pasted into each student’s Google drive “Works Cited” list.
