{"id":19336,"date":"2017-02-07T11:10:20","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T16:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.frankwbaker.com\/mlc\/?page_id=19336"},"modified":"2023-12-07T10:07:23","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T15:07:23","slug":"images-civil-rights-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.frankwbaker.com\/mlc\/images-civil-rights-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"Images of the Civil Rights Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><b>Images of the Civil Rights Movement<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A couple of summers ago, I traveled to Atlanta&#8217;s High Museum of Art to see the exhibit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20101231154443\/http:\/\/www.high.org\/main.taf?p=3,3,1,2,2\">Road to Freedom: Photographs of the <em>Civil Rights<\/em> Movement, 1956\u20131968<\/a>. I was spellbound\u00a0by this collection of images from this period in history and I learned more than I ever knew.<\/p>\n<p>I have previously included <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100308030543\/http:\/\/www.kodak.com\/US\/en\/corp\/features\/moore\/mooreIndex.shtml\">photographs of LIFE Magazine&#8217;s Charles Moore<\/a> in my visual literacy\u00a0workshops. A passage about him and his photos, in the Pulitzer Prize-winning book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/155579\/the-race-beat-by-gene-roberts-and-hank-klibanoff\/\">The Race Beat<\/a>,\u00a0 led me to learn more. These stories and photos are powerful reminders\u00a0of the importance of photojournalism at this critical time in American history.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;ve learned another exhibit, <a href=\"https:\/\/nehontheroad.org\/exhibition\/for-all-the-world-to-see\/\">\u201cFor All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle\u00a0for Civil Rights,\u201d<\/a> is at the Center of International Photography in New York City and was\u00a0just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/21\/arts\/design\/21civil.html\">reviewed in The New York Times<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110224210550\/http:\/\/www.umbc.edu\/cadvc\/foralltheworld\/intro.php\">companion web site<\/a> is an online exhibition worth exploring.\u00a0 There is also an <a href=\"http:\/\/yalebooks.yale.edu\/book\/9780300121315\/all-world-see\">accompanying book<\/a> of the same name.
