They\u00a0advertise inside and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankwbaker.com\/conveniencestoreads.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outside stores<\/a>, at sporting events, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankwbaker.com\/smokingmusic.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">music concerts<\/a> and in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankwbaker.com\/smokingandfilms.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">movies.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">They also place their ads in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tobaccofreekids.org\/reports\/doubletalk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magazines<\/a>, some of which your students read regularly.\u00a0\u00a0This activity is designed to get them actively involved in\u00a0understanding the persuasion\u00a0techniques used in print ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Students should be seated at tables, 5 or 6 to a table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Here is a portion of a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150320231054\/http:\/www.frankwbaker.com\/marketing%20of%20cigarettes.ppt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PowerPoint <\/a>that I use. You will want each group of students to have a different ad. In their groups, they should be given 3-5 minutes to talk about the words, the images, the layout, the colors, the techniques of persuasion. At the end of five minutes, one student from each group explains what his\/her group found..<\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction of Counter advertising<br \/>\n<\/b>Ask students if they know what the phrase &#8216;counter advertising&#8217; means.<br \/>\nUsing overheads, you can show students <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070119165357\/http:\/\/www.frankwbaker.com\/counteradexamples.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some examples<\/a>. Once students understand the purpose of counter advertising, then you can tell them they will have 15-20 minutes in order to work as a group to produce a counter ad from their original ad.<\/p>\n<p><b>Manipulatives needed<\/b>:\u00a0 scissors, crayons, markers, glue stick, Scotch tape, construction paper, etc (one per table)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Students are encouraged to change their original ad (this is a team activity with all students contributing ideas: they can either alter images or\u00a0words or both, or they can create an original counter ad). Students will need the most time (20 minutes or more) for the production of their &#8220;new&#8221; ad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">At the conclusion, a representative of each team is called upon to stand up and explain to the entire group how their group changed their original ad<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Teachers<\/strong>: Using the counter ads produced by your students, locate an appropriate place at school to display their work. This may be a bulletin board,\u00a0even a web site. (Parental permission may be required to post student works).
