The objective in a media class should be to come to conclusions and insights about the media rather than to adopt certain positions or opinions, no matter how clearly correct people might consider these positions.<\/span>Start with a question such as:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;How are the news channels doing?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let the discussion flow freely for a little while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then &#8211; if the class does not do this for you first &#8211; contextualize the question by taking a trip through the key concepts of media education :<br \/>\nWho is asking, and on whose behalf? (Audience)<br \/>\nWhich news channels are included in the question? (Audience\/ideology\/values\/politics)<br \/>\nWhich ones are excluded? (audience\/ideology\/values\/politics)<br \/>\nWhat is meant by &#8220;how are they doing&#8221;?<br \/>\nAre we asking about jolts for viewers? (Media are constructed)<br \/>\nAre we asking about reliability and journalistic objectivity? (Versions of reality)<br \/>\nAre we asking about how the channels make us feel? (Audience positioning\/politics)<br \/>\nAre we asking about audience share or ratings? (Commercial interests\/ownership)<br \/>\nAre we asking about congruence with a given set of assumptions about the war? (Values\/ideology)<br \/>\nAre we asking about style of presentation? (Audience, response, form and content, aesthetics)<br \/>\nHow are our answers and those of others affected by race\/ethnicity, gender, class, faith, nationality?<br \/>\nWhat other questions could\/should we be asking?<br \/>\nHow can we recognize a &#8220;right&#8221;
