I was pleased to be among those participating in\u00a0“Rebooting The News,”\u00a0a three day event at Temple
\nUniversity in Philadelphia. (read School Library Journal’s\u00a0preview<\/a>) Attendees came from journalism,
\nnews, education and activism, just to name a few. Among the highlights (to me) was hearing
\ndetails of the newly developed News Literacy college course at Stony Brook University, New York.
\nThe developer of that course,\u00a0Howard Schneider,<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0spoke at the event on Friday morning<\/a>, and according
\nto what I saw\/heard, what his students are going through is rigorous. This is not about journalism education,
\nbut rather\u00a0education for all.\u00a0Working groups had lengthy discussions about what this might look like in
\nAmerican schools and why all of this is critical. Details are available at the event’s\u00a0wiki<\/a>.\"\"<\/a>
\nAnother related initiative, dubbed\u00a0The News Literacy Project, aimed at middle and high school students,
\nis the brainchild of former Los Angeles Times reporter Alan Miller, and has just gotten started: details\u00a0here<\/a>.
\nTNLP has posted its promotional video on YouTube and you can watch it\u00a0here<\/a>.As part of the continuing project to spread the word about “news literacy” and its importance in K-12 education,
\nI have volunteered to assist the RTN project’s co-directors, Renee Hobbs (Temple University) and Bill Densmore
\n(University of Massachusetts), correlate the program’s goals and objectives to current K-12 teaching standards.
\nIn addition, I will use this space to provide links to news stories, previous research and surveys regarding young people,
\ncivic engagement and news.<\/p>\n

What is news literacy?
\nA definition offered by Howard Schneider (Dean of Journalism, Stony Brook University):
\n\u201cthe ability to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports, whether they come
\nvia print, TV,\u00a0 on the Internet\u201d (we don\u2019t use the word truth)\u00a0 \u201creliable information is actionable information– it allows news
\nconsumers to make a judgment, reach a conclusion, or take an action\u201d<\/p>\n

Rebooting The News conference participants’ definition:
\n“News surrounds us and as such news literacy is an essential life\u00a0skill for everyone. To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson:
\nKnowledge of\u00a0current issues is essential to informed citizenship in a democracy. We\u00a0are concerned about the effects
\nof media messages on children and\u00a0others. Modern participatory culture makes every citizen a potential\u00a0creator of
\nnews in social media, blogs, email and the web. We believe a\u00a0literate citizen understands the purposes, processes
\nand economics of\u00a0 news.\u00a0Therefore, it is time for American education to include the acquisition\u00a0of 21st-century,
\ncritical-thinking skills for analyzing and judging the\u00a0reliability of news, differentiating among facts, opinions and\u00a0assertions
\nin the media we create and distribute. News literacy\u00a0standards can be research based in multiple content areas.
\nIt can be\u00a0taught most effectively in cross-curricular, inquiry-based format at\u00a0all grade levels. It is a necessary
\ncomponent for literacy in\u00a0contemporary society.\u00a0”<\/p>\n

News Literacy & Media Literacy: What’s the difference?
\nNot much really. If you take the time to read NAMLE’s media literacy\u00a0core principles and critical thinking questions<\/a>,
\nyou might agree that news literacy does not have to be invented: much of the work exists already.<\/p>\n

K-12 Teaching Standards
\nWhen we think about the news and how young people are exposed to and think about news, a number of topics
\narise, all of which can be used as teachable moments for educators. News comes in all forms (TV, newspapers,
\nmagazines, Internet, cable TV and more). How do students use “critical thinking skills” (if at all) when they are
\nexposed to news\/information?\u00a0 Why do they seemingly believe everything they, see, read and hear?\u00a0 What are the pressures
\non news organizations today; how is news made and who makes it; what is the function of a gatekeeper of news;
\nhow is news received and understood? Why do Comedy Central and cell phones get more attention than traditional
\nnews sources? Who sets the news agenda; and who owns the media and why does it matter?
\nAll of these topics are perfect opportunities for educators to meet state standards requirements- for example:
\n– critical thinking; critical viewing
\n– media codes & conventions;
\n– distinguishing fact vs. fiction;
\n– understanding techniques of persuasion;
\n– word choice;
\n– point-of-view (perspective); author bias;
\n– understanding\u00a0informational texts<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0text features<\/a>;
\n– information\/media\/visual literacy;
\n– economics and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
