INTRODUCTION<\/p>\n

Using the news in the K-12 classroom is an excellent way to engage young people. Reading, writing and creating projects related to the news is part of most state’s\u00a0teaching standards.<\/a><\/p>\n

Students should be exposed to news via print (newspapers and magazines), and non-print (radio, Television, the Internet.) Both mainstream and non-mainstream sources should be included.<\/p>\n

To incorporate media literacy into your existing teaching, I recommend you download the\u00a0core concepts of media literacy<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0critical thinking questions<\/a>\u00a0handouts as a way of getting started.<\/p>\n

Currently, the news business is going through radical changes as advertisers (and readers) move from traditional print to online services. In addition, young people have gravitated to television and the web for more information.<\/p>\n

Using the table of contents on the left, you will find a host of excellent resources, all designed to help you teach with and about the news.<\/p>\n
