Looking Presidential: Images of the President
What does a president look like? When you see photographs of the President,
what are your expectations? When you are the new incoming President and
you are covered by the media, what does it mean to look presidential?

Here are some images from the media and recent Obama press events.
What are the elements of the images that translate "presidential" ?
What is the same, what is different, and why?
How much control does the President have over how the media show him?

Some of the sources located at Visual Literacy may be helpful to you and your students.

From November 8 Canadian press news story:
Looking presidential behind a massive podium, flanked by advisers and backed by a forest of flags,
Mr. Obama made an important, symbolic appearance yesterday at a Chicago news conference.
Although he won't be president until Jan. 20, 2009, and despite repeatedly making the point
“that we only have one president at a time,” the carefully orchestrated event was designed
to make Mr. Obama look and sound presidential.
