Obama Campaign Turns Supporters Into Marketing Gurus

On Sunday December 9, 2007, Senator Barack Obama brought his campaign for the democratic nomination for
president to the University of South Carolina’s football stadium on an unseasonably warm afternoon. With polls
showing him closing the gap with Senator Hillary Clinton, local and national news media were there.
Obama also got attention because of the new marketing tool he brought along: talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
The Obama-Oprah combination attracted more than 30-thousand supporters. The campaign took advantage
of that large crowd to collect valuable information.

Upon entering the stadium, volunteers distributed the “Help Make History” form.
Supporters were encouraged to complete the form, which requested the caller’s name, address,
phone number and email address and pledge to volunteer, support and vote for Obama during
South Carolina’s January 2008 democratic primary election.

While people waited for the appearance of the candidate and the talk show host,
campaign workers enlisted everyone in the crowd to utilize their cell phones to

contact four other potential Obama supporters. This information was also collected
to be used by the campaign.
