How Framing Affects Our Understanding
A key principle in media literacy is critical inquiry:
asking questions like: who or what is left out of the message and why?
In photography, the person shooting the picture can manipulate the image by:
- moving closer to or further from the subject
- adjusting the lens to zoom in closer, or pull out to seem further away
- changing the focus
- changing the depth-of-field
- deliberately placing objects inside the viewfinder/frame
Photos taken for publication in newspapers, magazines, or web sites,
can be sized or cropped depending on the space allotted.
Compare and contrast these news photos: notice how each successive photo
reveals a bit more about the event.
