The 62nd Primetime Emmy® Awards, air live coast-to-coast on NBC,
Sunday, August 29 (5-8 p.m. PT, 8-11 p.m. ET).

 


Background: Television is a big business; it attracts audiences in the millions,
who in turn watch the commercials, which pay for the programs.  Every year,
the best of television is honored by the Emmy Awards.  Here are some questions
to get students thinking about this annual event.

 

1. What are the Emmy Awards?


2. What organization awards them?


3. What programs/stars are nominated and where can you find the total list of nominees?


4. What categories are included in the Emmy awards?


5. How do the categories correlate to the “genres” of television programming?


6. What “rule changes” were made this year regarding the primetime awards?


7. Who is receiving the annual Governors Award and Bob Hope Humanitarian award?


8. What are the criteria for the people selected to receive these awards?


9. Why do the networks and the producers place “For Your Consideration” ads in trade publications?
(Teachers: ask students to locate a FYC ad online and have them analyze/deconstruct it or have
your students create their own FYC ad.)


10. Who gets to vote for the nominees?


11. Why is it important that the Emmy Award telecast secure a large viewership?


12. Who is this year's host?  Why was he selected to be the host?


13. Why do you like to watch this awards show? What do you hope to see?


14. Who benefits from the Emmy Awards telecast?
