The New York Times ran this photo
(above) on its web page in May of 2007 but the caption under the photo said
nothing about the candidate, the location, or the event. The caption read: “Senator
Hillary Rodham Clinton has used infoUSA’s jet for campaign trips, but says she
has followed ethics rules on accepting private air travel. (photo from NY
Times website Saturday May 26, 2007)
As news readers, the caption failed to tell even the basic information.
Subsequent research found a similar photo that day by the Reuters news
organization which stated:
“Democratic Presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
(D-NY) speaks during a campaign stop in Sioux City, Iowa May 26, 2007.”
Analyzing the Hillary Clinton Photo
The photographer is situated rather low, making the foreground (Hillary) the
center of attention and more important. This position has allowed him to include
not only the large audience at ground level, but also those standing along the
railings on the second level tier.
He has deliberately captured the stage onto
which she is standing, and notice that her name is positioned facing the camera
in the center. Her website address is also clear.
The image is full of color:
red, white and blue, not only on the stage, but also scattered around the room
in the way American flags are also positioned, to the left and right of the
larger American flag in the background.
She appears to be looking up, but we
don’t know where (perhaps to people standing on the second level tier.) She is clapping and several of the members of the audience
appear to be doing so too.
